Applied Technology : A-Day, Period 3, Fall 05, Section 1

Why You Should Explore Technology

Middle school years, often called the wonder years, represent a critical period in students’ development. During these crucial years, students develop their interest, knowledge, skills, and attitudes about various subjects, including science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (SMET). Besides learning, applying, and reinforcing various “SMET” connections, the technology program at Angevine helps all students learn important life skills, including collaborating and working effectively in teams, solving problems creatively, making strategic decisions, and thinking critically as they engage in hands-on activities and design challenges. While creating, testing, and improving their product designs, students master the design process and feel more satisfied. Some of their peers even “consult” and “patent” their prototypes! These active, hands-on DESIGN activities are bound to serve our students well and help them cope with challenges of globalization. Besides, our preliminary studies indicate that students who excel in “SMET” in middle schools, not only perform better academically in other subject areas and pursue higher-level science, mathematics, and engineering classes at high schools, but it also empowers them with numerous career options. Courses currently offered at Angevine include: Applied Technology Exploratory, Applied Technology, Gateway To Technology (GTT), and Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement ( MESA ).

Standards-based Scenarios and Students' Thoughtful Online Responses: Schoolwork & Homework

Students will develop an understanding of and be able to select and use transportation technologies (Standard 18 in the Standards for Technological Literacy)

With improved aerodynamic efficiencies, the speeds of the cars in NASCAR have increased greatly over the years. If you were the one of the officials of NASCAR, and your job is to try and decrease the speeds of the cars, what would you do?

You have been building filters to clean dirty water. Before we test the pH, turbidity, conductivity, and flow rate in our next class, click on the link Drinking Water Games & Activities. EXPLORE the various games and activities there that help you LEARN more about water and drinking water. After exploring one or more games and activities there, TYPE in:

  1. What you DID?
  2. What games or activities you LIKED?
  3. What you found INTERESTING?
  4. What QUESTIONS you have?

In your last class discussion, you had a hypothetical scenario in which an 18-wheeler transporting hazardous material crashed into a Boulder ditch that feeds into the Baseline reservoir.

1. What are the three MAJOR hazardous material the 18-wheeler truck might be hauling?
2. Write a short paragraph about what these three harardous material.
3. In the filteration set-up at the Lafayette Water Treatment Plant that Mr. Fulbright showed and explained to you, what are the six layers?
4. What keeps the six layers separated? Explain you answer.

“Technologies can be used to repair damage caused by natural (or man-made) disasters and to break down waste from the use of various products and systems.” (Standard 5E in the Standards for Technological Literacy, ITEA, p. 69)

Hypothetical Scenario:

The water supply to Lafayette got contaminated when an 18-wheeler transporting hazardous material crashed into it.

Question:

As a member of the city’s environmental engineering team, what are your recommendations to the Lafayette Public Works Department?

“Interpret and evaluate the accuracy of the information obtained and determine if it is useful.” (Standard 6D in the Standards for Technological Literacy, ITEA, p. 137).

There are two parts to your writing assignment here.

1st part (Post your draft 1 reply after your have answered questions 1 & 2) 10 Points

1. Summarize, in your own words, the main theme or feature and findings of the author(s) (Make sure you include the Article # you selected in your post).

2. Think and write down at least one question that comes to your mind after you have read the article. Would you like to discuss this in class?

2nd part (Post your 2nd reply after reading your 1st post) 10 Points

3. Now that your have read your own post, copy (Ctrl + C, or Right Click on mouse and Copy), paste (Ctrl + V, or Right Click on mouse and Paste), and EDIT your own post. Feel free to add more evidence (Answers the question, “HOW DO YOU KNOW”) and reasons (Answers the question, “IF … THEN …”) in your edited post.

4. Identify five words that you have learned from your reading of the newspaper article, and type them before your post your 2nd reply. Feel free to include the sentence in which the words were used for your future reference and/or add the words to your spelling list.

“Throughout history, new technologies have resulted from the demands, values, and interests of individuals, businesses, industries, and societies.” (Standard 6D in the Standards for Technological Literacy, ITEA, p. 77).

Select any one of the folders and respond to the following questions:

1. What is the title, author, year, and source of the article you've read?

2. Summarize, in your own words, the main theme or feature and findings of the author.

3. Think and write down one question that comes to your mind after you have read the article. Would you like to discuss this in class?

You cannot build and develop technology without resources. To build your effective tall structure, you used some of these resources: People, Energy, Creativity, Knowledge, Materials, Investment (Capital or Money), Time, Tools, and Skill. You could remember these by using the acronmy PECK MITTS.

Select any three of these nine resources and write down why you need them to build and develop new technologies.

“Technology, by itself, is neither good nor bad, but decisions about the use of products and systems can result in desirable or undesirable consequences.” (Standard 4E in the Standards for Technological Literacy, ITEA, p. 60)

For our class discussion today, here is one opinion.

“The gas prices would have to be over $5 a gallon before people consider buying smaller, fuel-efficient hybrid cars. Until then, most people will continue buying bigger cars and SUVs.”

Write down one claim, evidence, and reason why you would AGREE and one claim, evidence, and reason why you would DISAGREE with this opinion.
Your reasons must show that you have thought about the CONSEQUENCES of your choices and actions.

“The use of technology affects humans in various ways, including their safety, comfort, choices, and attitudes about technogy’s development and use.” (Standard 4D in the Standards for Technological Literacy, ITEA, p. 60)

For our class discussion today, here is one dilemma.

A competition to build the world’s tallest building and the associated engineering challenge of reaching great heights have been continuing themes for the past few centuries. Cities and countries compete to build and brag about their tallest buildings.

1.       What do you think drives buildings/structures even higher?

2.       Why is the idea of building the tallest building so captivating?

Make sure you include
1. Your CLAIM
2. Your supporting EVIDENCE
3. Your justifying REASON(S)
in your reply
